With the faster advent of technology and more and more devices being connected to the internet, the amount of data being collected, stored, and processed is increasing continuously.
Let us look at a few data protection regulations in developed regions such as Europe, and America, and in developing regions such as South America and South-East Asia.
- As mentioned in the previous video, GDPR was implemented in 2018 across Europe and affected all companies that dealt with citizens of Europe. It provides a legal framework for keeping everyone’s personal data safe by forcing companies to have robust processes in place for handling, storing, and using personal information. GDPR brought in stricter regulations, bigger fines, and more reputational damage for non-compliance. Companies can be fined as much as 4% of their annual revenue for non-compliance with data protection regulations.
- Unlike the centralized GDPR in Europe, the USA has data protection laws at the state level. The California Consumer Privacy Act, one of the more advanced laws in the USA allows residents to decide precisely how their data is stored and used. Some of the other states are following suit and are in the process of passing or have already passed similar laws.
- Brazil has the General Data Protection Law consisting of more than 40 data privacy-related laws implemented over the years. The country has taken steps to define legislation to create harmony between the different laws, define the concepts of personal data and public data, and established liabilities to ensure comprehensive compliance.
- On the other side of the globe, India has enacted the Personal Data Protection bill inspired by many regulations from the GDPR. Apart from notice and prior consent, the bill restricts companies to only collect data that is necessary for providing a service to an individual.
- Apart from these regulations, other countries with notable and strict data regulations that have been implemented include Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Angola.
Next, you will learn about the things to be aware of, when handling customer or employee data in your everyday work.
